Can you make Shredded Chicken in an Instant Pot?

Shredded chicken is amazing when you’re doing weekly meal prep, and it’s even easier when done in an instant pot.

Instant pot shredded chicken is a real game-changer, and by seasoning chicken with different toppings, you can get whole new meals every day.

Before coming across this magical method of cooking up chicken, I used to make trips every day to the grocery store to get whole rotisserie chicken whenever I needed cooked chicken for a recipe.

That was way too dry and very hard to shred, with zero taste.

It costs me a lot of money, and it consumes time as well.

After finding out how easy it is to make shredded chicken in an instant pot, I managed to save a lot of money and a lot of my time.

The recipe for making shredded chicken in an instant pot is very easy, just put the raw chicken breasts in your instant pot with broth and seasoning and let it pressure cook at medium pressure for 12 minutes.

The pressure cooking makes the broth absorb in the chicken and makes it juicy.

After shredding the chicken, which is done under 5 minutes as the chicken is cooked tenderly and is very soft, just put your chicken in the cooker with a little bit of broth and cook it for 5 more minutes.

This will make your chicken stay juicy for the whole week, and you can even put this in the freezer for a longer preserving period.

As you all know that I like to keep my meals healthy, pure, and easy to cook, and cooking chicken in Instant pot has always given me juicy, tender, and moist chicken in no time.

The pressure cooker works its magic with just a little bit of broth and seasoning, and you will easily shred chicken.

Using the alternatives for a chicken like oven or slow cooking can be a hit or miss, but with instant pot, you will always get yummy chicken that is cooked tenderly to the core.

  1. Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker:

Here, the first instant pot product I’m reviewing is Instant pot duo 7 in 1 pressure cooker.

This is a very accessible and easy-to-use pressure cooker with no complexities and difficult buttons to operate.

You just have to click the needed buttons, and the pressure cooker will do all the things automatically.

With a world-renowned brand like Instant pot, there’s almost no chance of anything going wrong, and you will always have your perfect dish at the end of your cooking.

Now when it comes to the functions instant pot duo can serve, it can sauté, steam, slow cook, pressure cook, make yogurt, and even sterilize your pots and jars.

With the pressure cooking function, you can make endless varieties of different meals.

The best function of the instant pot duo is the pressure cook, where I am able to cook my chicken breasts and then shred them to use in multiple dishes.

I side by side, tried three types of chicken breasts and saw some timing issues with each of them.

The trick to mastering the art of using an Instant pot for cooking chicken is setting the perfect timer.

After lots of multiple fails, trials, and errors, I ended up figuring out the perfect timing to cook sliced chicken breasts, whole chicken breast, and frozen chicken breast.

And even though there was some difference in their cooking time, they were fairly quicker than my slow cooker and the efforts needed were even lesser.

The cooking time for sliced breast was 12 minutes.

For the whole breast, it took 15 minutes, and for the frozen, it took around 20 minutes.

Even with the shredding included, the whole process didn’t take me more than 25 minutes.

The chicken became so soft and tender that it was very easy to shred.

After shredding just to get some browning on the chicken, I used the sauté option on the pot to give it an extra bit of texture and taste.

Sautéing the chicken made it taste even better.

After the chicken was done and dusted, it seemed enough for a week of unplanned meals, and I froze it all when I needed it.

I can just give it a little bit of steam in my instant pot duo, and the chicken will be thawed, ready for instant use, and quick healthy recipes.

Pros
  • The inner pot is made up of stainless steel, so you know it is going to be durable in the long run.
  • It cooks my chicken faster than expected and retains all the nutrients and moisture.
  • These pots make it very easy for you to create more recipes with shredded chicken.
Cons
  • Can be a little bit bulky and consume lots of counter space.

  1. Instant Pot Duo Plus 6 Quart 9-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker:

I always like to keep an extra box of frozen shredded chicken in my freezer for extra help.

This helps me in whipping up quick dishes whenever I’m in a hurry, and my family is hungry for some good food.

My usual go-to dishes with shredded chicken are buffalo chicken dip, Caesar chicken salad, casseroles, stir fry, and enchiladas.

These dishes are easy to make and take only a few minutes to prepare, and with my instant pot duo plus, I can shred all the chicken needed for them easily.

You still have to shred the chicken by hand, or shredding claws by the chicken will be softer than breaking apart just with a touch.

Instant pot duo is just another amazing product from the instant pot brand, just with a little bit of extra added features.

It is a 6 quart pot with enough space for a meal that can satisfy 8-10 people in your family.

Stainless steel makes up the inner pot, so it is easy to clean up after the whole process, and you will not fear it catching rust.

The difference between instant pot duo and duo plus is that the duo has 7-in-1 features while the duo plus has 9-in-1 improved features.

The instant pot duo is actually almost similar to the instant pot duo plus when it’s working.

The timing of cooking chicken is again very less, and again it is a very hands-off experience with the instant pot duo plus.

The pot is also equipped with safety measures like instant and natural pressure release and lid locking mechanism.

I again tried seeing how fast it could cook my chicken breasts, it only took me 20 minutes to do the whole process, including the shredding, and my chicken was ready to be used in multiple dishes.

And I froze the leftover chicken, which will be used in future dishes.

This is a very resourceful recipe for all my working women trying to maintain their work and their families.

This technique has helped me always prepare quick and delicious meals in very little time.

Pros
  • Consistent cooking feature where the inner pressure maintains properly and your food cooks evenly.
  • LED panel in the front, which shows different cooking presets and timers that you can control easily.
  • This pot comes in 3 variable sizes, so you can choose the optimum pot for your needs.
Cons
  • It could take a little longer to build up inside pressure, which can lead to longer cooking times.
  1. Instant Pot Duo Crisp Large 6Qt 11-in-1 Air Fryer & Electric Pressure Cooker Combo:

Here we have the amazing instant pot duo crisp, which not only cooks your food perfectly but also fries it up and crisps it perfectly to give it extra texture, and a different taste.

You can never go wrong when using instant pot duo, and even when it comes with an extra crisping lid that doubles as an air fryer and steamer, it’s like a cherry on top.

This pot is a multi-cooker, and if you remove the air frying lid, it can replace most of the cooking utensils in your kitchen.

Usually, when I want to shred my chicken, I cook it first in my instant duo crisp with a little bit of broth, and the chicken comes out cooked and juicy.

After shredding it, I pop some of the chicken into the air frying basket and close up that specific lid.

The pot has an automatic preset for the air frying function, and with that, you can easily select your timer and just switch on the air fryer.

After only 5 minutes, my chicken was crispy on the outside, and I could use that.

And it went perfectly with my green salad as a topping, and it tasted great as a simple snack as well.

Just dip it in some sauce, and it works as a healthy low-carb snack.

Instant pot duo crisp is definitely an upgrade from the other products of Instant pot, and If you’re looking for a pot that’s simpler to work with, this is the one to go for.

It does all the same functions as an instant pot duo and even air fries your chicken; then this is your way to go.

I also got a lot of added accessories with the instant pot, which worked amazingly well, and this pot went perfectly in my contemporary kitchen.

So, whether you have a little or a large family, this pot will always help in your hurrying times and cook your food for you without any extra worries.

Pros
  • User friendly and provides multiple functions in just 1 appliance.
  • It’s large enough to hold an entire chicken, i.e., around 6 pounds of meat.
  • 11 smart programs which allow you to cook or fry automatically.
Cons
  • The air frying lid Is a bit heavy, and you will need to use both the lids to lift it up.
  • The air frying basket can be a bit better in terms of quality.
  1. Instant Pot Vortex Plus 10 Quart Air Fryer, Rotisserie, and Convection Oven:

This instant pot production is up to date, the best air frying vessel produced by the instant pot line.

This pot even has multiple options, but it is not suitable for functions like cooking and steaming.

This appliance works amazingly as an air fryer, rotisserie griller, and oven.

Instant pot has made a name for its brand by launching trendy and very useful over-the-counter digital cookers.

And the vortex pot is unlike any other thing that we have ever tested. It’s the latest technology designed by instant pot manufacturers.

They have combined three different techniques and cooking appliances into one big digital oven where you can make multiple dishes.

It might be a bit larger than the rest of the pots we have used, tried, and tested, but this is again very amazing when it comes to quick and healthy meal preps. It has a very big size of 10 quarts.

This size ensures that I will be baking a ton of chicken in one go which will add up to heaps of shredded chicken that can be preserved for later purposes.

In this convection oven, I was able to fit a whole big chicken sewn onto a rotisserie rod, and the chicken cooked quickly, and it was even juicy and tender.

It works unexpectedly well and will leave you wondering about its amazing technology.

The highest temperature this oven can reach is 400 degrees, which to me, makes this appliance ideal for baking, roasting, broiling, cooking, and even dehydrating fruits and vegetables.

I tried making a rotisserie chicken in the convection oven, and it was very much more efficient for me than running to the grocery store every time I needed precooked chicken.

The vortex pot cooked my 4 pound chicken in just 50 minutes, and it was crispy brown on the outside.

I took the chicken from the oven, and attempted to shred it, the meat was cooked to the core, and it was shredded perfectly.

So instant pot has again made a victory when it comes to invention and innovation in the matters of cooking.

I think that this mini convection oven is ideal for people who love baking and cooking.

The best part is that it’s a digital appliance, so there is no need to find a gas connection for the appliance.

This will work fantastically as a countertop oven.

Pros
  • I like the most about this oven because it has a see-through glass on the door so we can keep a check on our food while it’s cooking.
  • Very budget-friendly
  • All the parts are dishwasher safe.
  • Cooks your food evenly and crisps it perfectly through the even crisp technology.
Cons
  • The interior is made up of nonstick material.
  • Will need loads of countertop space.
  1. Instant Pot Duo Crisp XL 8Qt 11-in-1 Air Fryer & Electric Pressure Cooker Combo:

The instant pot duo crisp XL is another over-the-counter digital product from instant pot, and it serves the same astounding functions that the other instant pot duo crisp does.

It has the same 7-in-1 functions where this pot is used as a multi-cooker, and you can perform different functions with it in no time, whether it is slow cook or pressure cook, steam or air fry.

There’s nothing that can’t be achieved by this wonder of a pot.

I bought this product exclusively for the sake of testing it out, and I was as impressed by its functions as the other instant pot duo crisp.

The upside of this pot is that it is even larger in size.

It can hold more food than other cookers and can definitely perform all the functions more efficiently.

I bought 6 pounds of chicken breast and put it all into the instant pot duo crisp XL for cooking. I added some broth, garlic powder, herbs, salt, and pepper and set the timer to 20 minutes.

The whole 6 pounds of chicken fitted easily in the pot, so it was sure that this pot was specifically made to be used for bigger families.

After the 20 minutes were up, the kitchen smelled of herbs and garlic, and I knew that this chicken was going to be amazing.

I removed the lid when the pressure was released completely and checked my meat.

It was cooked perfectly, and the chicken was so soft that it was breaking.

I took it out and shredded it with the help of forks, and again cooked it for 5 minutes with a little bit of broth and seasoning.

This gave an extra hit to the chicken.

After it was all done, I froze a major part of the chicken for later and kept some of it for testing out the air frying lid.

I had prepared some taco shells for crispy chicken tacos.

I dipped the shredded chicken into crispy chicken batter and secured the air frying lid to the pot, and placed my chicken pieces in the air frying lid.

I switched on the air frying option, and in just 15 minutes, I had beautiful shredded chicken chunks fried crisply, which looked delicious, and they were cooked evenly from all sides.

Even though this pot has the same functions, the bigger size will be of immense help when you’re cooking for cookouts and family brunches and feasts.

Pros
  • The large 8-quart size is helpful for cooking bigger batches of chicken when you need more meat for meal prepping.
  • User-friendly interface and a big digital panel.
  • Air fryer feature retains your food’s natural nutrients and cooks them crisp without using any extra oil or fats, making your food extremely healthy.
Cons
  • Steam release valve is manually operated.
  • The lid quality can be improved a little bit.
  1. Instant Pot Max 6 Quart Multi-use Electric Pressure Cooker with 15psi Pressure Cooking:

Instant pot max is undeniably the best pressure cooker to be produced by instant pot.

It is easy to use and very user-friendly, with 9 functional presets and a digital interface.

Instant pot really upped their game by launching this product as it is minimalistic, simple, and up to date with all your cooking needs.

The part that I like the most about this pot is that I do not have to open the pressure release vent after cooking, and that work is done just by clicking the pressure release option on the LED panel.

The max pot has more functions than any of the other instant pot products and makes cooking easier and more fun than ever.

The max pot has 8 basic multi-cooking functions that include pressure cooking, sauté, steaming, rice, sous vide, slow cook, broth, yogurt making, and canning.

It is the only pot capable of doing pressure canning as it is able to reach high 15 psi pressure.

I’d had enough of hearing about the instant pot maxs miracles, but I had to test it myself and see if it’s really worth the hype.

After a detailed trial, I can say that they are really worth the praise, and they really make my cooking process a lot quicker.

I can prep loads of chicken easily in the instant pot max in no time, and it comes out so flavorful and nutritious. I once dumped lots of frozen chicken into the pot and just waited for it to cook through.

As I didn’t have enough time to defrost the chicken, that was my only option and then hoping that it would not stay uncooked.

I pressed the timer for up to 15 minutes, and my chicken started pressure cooking under medium pressure with the broth and seasoning.

After 15minutes, I released the pressure by clicking the pressure release (venting) option on the touch screen.

This pot also gave me the option of pulse release, where the pressure was released in quick bursts, but it was taking a very long time, and I decided to quickly release the pressure and test the pulse release some other day.

To my surprise, the chicken was cooking perfectly to the core and became so juicy and soft.

Many people have different methods of shredding chicken, but my way is a little bit different and difficult as well, but it saves a lot of time.

What I do is that I leave the chicken in the pot, and with the help of my hand mixer, using the normal blades at low speed.

I shred the chicken inside the pot, it takes less than 1 minute, and the chicken gets shredded perfectly.

But do not try this method as it can be extremely dangerous if not done cautiously.

After the shredding was done, I was curious to try the canning feature of this pot, so I also gave that a try.

And I was able to can my shredded chicken and keep it on the shelf for up to 6 months, but if you’re looking for a simpler way, then you can always freeze your shredded chicken and thaw it whenever you want to use it.

Instant pot max has definitely made cooking chicken easier than before, and with its multiple functions,

I can easily try cooking multiple dishes with my pre-shredded chicken.

This pot makes cooking chicken for meal prep very fun and quick, and you don’t even need to check your pot for burns or to overheat as this pot is equipped to do all your work for you automatically.

Pros
  • This pot includes a nutriboost feature, which makes your broths and meals even tastier and boosts up the nutrients contained in your food.
  • Dishwasher friendly, so probably the easiest instant pot to clean.
  • Detachable power cord.
  • You get a lot of added accessories with the pot, like a measuring cup, spatula, trivet, and a rice paddle. A trivet helps you, specially when cooking chicken for meal prep.
Cons
  • The pulse release is not a very useful option.
  1. Instant Pot Ultra 80 Ultra 8 Qt 10-in-1 Multi-Use Programmable Pressure Cooker:

Summer is almost here, and I’m all ready to pack my fridge with prepping essentials so that I can save some cooking time in the kitchen.

Standing in front of the heat is something I hate with passion in summers.

I also love meals that can be easily cooked to enjoy under the sun. Before stumbling upon the pressure cooker, I used to slow cook my meals, and to be honest.

I didn’t enjoy the process very much. It took a very long, even though the end result was really good, but the long waiting part was not worth it.

I experimented with different recipes in a slow cooker, and I knew that there had to be some way that all this cooking could be done in a quicker and easier way.

And this is when I found pressure cooking and the renowned instant pot.

The first pressure cooker I bought for myself was the instant pot, and believe me, I am a person who hated cooking, but with this magical cooker, I started enjoying the process.

It provided me with a very hands-off and relaxing experience, which ended up in a delectable and delicious meal.

The instant pot ultra is definitely an upgrade from the rest of the instant pot pressure cookers, and this includes 10 features in one pot that can be used to cook multiple specific dishes.

With this pot, you can pressure cook your chicken or slow cook it.

You can even cook the chicken by making use of the sous vide option.

Whether you want to steam it or sauté it, the options are endless with the instant pot ultra. Once your chicken is done, you can make even more dishes with the help of it.

Be it one-pot pasta, creamy chicken risotto, Italian chicken, and literally many more options.

It even discards the options of buttons for timer setting and just turns the knob whenever you want to increase or decrease the timer.

During summers, my family enjoys tacos, quesadillas, salads, and pasta but cooking chicken every single time I need to cook one of these is a big hassle. Instant pot ultra 80 is there to save my life.

With its big capacity and huge volume, I can cook 4 pounds of chicken breast in one go and prepare a big batch of chicken that can be used all week long.

And with the meal prep done already, there’s not much cooking left, and I can chill in the sun with a nice taco in my hand.

Instant pot ultra makes the cooking chicken very easy with just a little bit of seasoning and the perfect timing.

You can have soft and juicy chicken for your meal prep.

This chicken can be kept in the freezer for long-term storage. Shredding the chicken is even easier when the meat is cooked perfectly.

With the instant pot ultra, you don’t have to worry about the chicken being undercooked or overcooked, and with its presets like soup, you can easily incorporate the same chicken into a yummy and healthy soup.

Pros
  • The settings are highly customizable, which allows me to cook in my own personal style.
  • You can even make desserts like cake in this cooker, not just the savory options.
  • Available in 3 sizes, 3, 6, and 8 quarts.
Cons
  • It might take extra 10-15 mints to build pressure.
  1. Instant Pot Duo Crisp 9-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker:

Another variant of the infamous instant pot duo crisp is here, and it claims to be better in many ways.

It appears to be a little easier to use at first glance than the 11 in 1 pressure cooker and air fryer.

It has 9 presets that amazingly promise cooking with just one touch and a complete experience where you don’t need to supervise your food every step of the way.

The air fryer and pressure cooker combo is definitely very useful.

It saves you from buying a lot of different pots and pans and also saves you the storage of keeping those pans, so you don’t have to wash other vessels after cooking.

It is very easy to use with conveniently transitioning lids.

These lids fit seamlessly into the pot and give you dual features in one pot.

This pot fits easily into my kitchen with its sleek black body and silver LED panel.

I use this pot normally to air fry my chicken wings and French fries and dry things like that, which does not need a lot of time, and I rarely use its pressure cooking option.

But when I need to make weekly preps for food like shredding chicken, boiling potatoes, and steaming vegetables, I pop the old pressure cooking lid back on and start pressure cooking and steaming them.

Even though this pot is designed to perform a lot of functions and no doubt this pot does what it’s expected to do.

It also has a tri-ply stainless steel base which makes heat convection very easy, and the handles on the pot don’t get hot when cooking like the other pressure cookers.

When cooking chicken, I like to keep it simple but flavorful by adding a little bit of dried herbs to the broth when cooking.

I opt for cooking chicken thighs as they are very juicy after cooking and do not dry out quickly, unlike chicken breast, which dry out even when overcooked a little bit.

In this cooker, I set the time for only 12 minutes to cook my chicken.

The pressure venting option was given on the touch panel, and I didn’t have to do it manually.

I shredded the chicken after it was cooked and put it in the frying basket, which is nonstick.

Changed the lid with the larger air frying lid and hinged it tightly in place.

The air frying basket has 2 levels, so you can get double work done in a single batch.

I placed my chicken in the fryer and clicked on the air frying option for only 5 minutes.

Crispy shredded chicken tastes amazing in salads and as a garnish for pasta and soups.

Suppose you are running low on storage and need an appliance with fuss-free operation and amazing overall performance.

In that case, this is definitely going to be your favorite pressure cooker plus air fryer.

Pros
  • A very versatile appliance that provides multiple other cooking options.
  • It is very energy efficient and reduces your energy consumption by a massive 50-70%.
  • Dishwasher friendly.
Cons
  • A big and bulky appliance that might be a little heavy.
  1. Instant Pot Star Wars 6Qt Duo Little Bounty, black:

If you’re a star wars lover like me and are always looking for little souvenirs and things for your home which will match your crazy obsession with star wars, then this pot is designed specifically for you.

Instant pot came up with their star wars limited edition pressure cookers in six different designs.

These pots are beautiful and stylish to look at and also hold up to the high working standard of Instant pots.

The manufacturers have focused on the quality of the product as well its looks and exterior body.

This pot has little pictures of Yoda, a very famous star wars character, printed on its stainless steel body.

Size-wise this variant comes in three different sizes, and it’s designed to fit into your kitchen perfectly.

Along with the fantastic body, it has 7 core features, and by combining and customizing those features, you can 100s of multiple dishes.

These pressure cookers, even though they are very easy to use but present a learning curve like water to ingredients ratio and timer settings for customized recipes.

For me, pre-shredded chicken for meal prepping is the easiest thing I have done in my instant pot, and its size is perfect for cooking enough chicken that will last me at least one week.

The functions and working of this pot are almost similar to the other pots from instant pots, and there’s not a big difference in its features.

It comes with one-touch features where I was able to select the perfect preset for my chicken and then customize the timings as per my quantity of ingredients.

Usually, in my instant pots, it takes only 15 minutes to cook chicken breasts, and for this pot, I decided to keep the same time and started the pressure cooking.

After the timer ended, it did a little beep boop tune which all of the instant pots have in common.

After the cooking was done, I shredded the chicken, and there have been no disappointments so far with this pot.

If you’re a war of the legendary star wars, then get this cute pressure cooker and cook like a true Jedi.

Pros
  • The size and the beautiful designs are a seamless fit for any kitchen, and you can choose from six other designs in the star wars collection.
  • Durable stainless steel pot.
  • Delay cooking plus keep warm option.
Cons
  • It didn’t feature a touch panel or an advanced LED display.
  • They might need a lot of counter space.

How long does it take to Cook Frozen Chicken in an Instant Pot?

Each instant pot has different timings for different types and quantities of food.

For example, when your food is cold and frozen, it will first need heat to defrost, and for that purpose, your food might take longer than usual to cook.

For thinly sliced food, it is easier for the heat to cook your food and thus the lesser cooking time.

It all depends on the type of your food you’re putting in.

According to my experience with cooking chicken in Instant pot.

It mostly took equal time to cook in different pots.

The only variable factor was the type of chicken used.

Frozen chicken is harder to cook through and takes more time, whereas refrigerated or fresh chicken needs lesser time to cook in an Instant Pot.

The frozen chicken was my first priority to test in the pot during the trial stages. I put 2 pounds of frozen chicken breasts in the pot and set the timer to 20 minutes according to an online recipe.

Usually, for refrigerated chicken, I go for only 12 minutes, but for the frozen chicken, I feel like 20 minutes hit the right spot.

Figuring out a cooking timer is definitely a learning curve with instant pot, but 20 minutes for frozen chicken breasts were perfect, and the result I got was pretty satisfying.

The chicken was cooked thoroughly, perfectly moist and juicy, and easily shredded.
